Vice Consul for Ankara

The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and has a vacancy for a permanent Vice Consul for the Consular team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing Syria-related consular cases, liaison across relevant government departments, and providing input to developing policy. This position requires a self-starter who can work with minimal supervision. 

 

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Provide consular assistance in Syria related (and other complex or high profile) consular cases to consular customers and their families in line with consular guidance and taking account of the special circumstances which these cases present for appropriate handling;
  • Lead the Turkey consular network response to Syria-related case handling, providing policy updates, advice and guidance and a link into other relevant government departments;
  • Liaise with local and central government over individual cases and on policy related to the handling and treatment of Syria-related consular cases in Turkey;
  • Provide briefing and reporting as necessary for senior stakeholders including ministerial and senior official briefs, MPs letter and other correspondence as required;
  • Work with internal stakeholders to develop policy in handling of Syria-related cases, ensuring policy development in London and with other government departments takes into account, and is consistent with, existing consular policy and practice;
  • Maintain and complete relevant management information to track casework and keep stakeholders appropriately informed;
  • Provide Ankara-based support for wider Turkey Consular Network activities, including drafting of diplomatic notes, briefing, meeting attendance and support for influencing objectives.

 

Required Experience & Skills:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • Strong listening and communication skills;
  • Previous experience of working for UK government;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Strong customer care and organisation skills;
  • Able to work under pressure independently and as part of a team;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications;
  • Proficiency in the following FCO key competences:

o    Seeing the Big Picture – seeing the big picture is about having an in-depth understanding and knowledge of how your role fits with and supports organisational objectives and the wider public needs.

o    Making Effective Decisions - effectiveness in this area is about using sound judgement, evidence and knowledge to arrive at accurate, expert and professional decisions and advice.

o    Collaborating and Partnering - people skilled in this area are team players who create and maintain positive, professional and trusting working relationships with a wide range of people within and outside the Civil Service to help get business done.

o    Managing a Quality Service - effectiveness in this area is about valuing and modelling professional excellence and expertise to deliver service objectives and striving to improve the quality of service, taking account of diverse customer needs and requirements.

o    Delivering at Pace - effectiveness in this area means focusing on delivering timely performance with energy and taking responsibility and accountability for quality outcomes.

o    Leading & Communicating - effectiveness in this area is about showing our pride and passion for public service leading from the front and communicating with clarity, conviction, integrity and enthusiasm.

  

Terms and Conditions:

This is a full-time permanent contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, as well as security clearance and is expected to commence employment on 30 of May 2016.

The annual salary for this position is 84,713.60 TL gross, B3 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Ankara are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Turkish employment law.
