Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Consulate General Istanbul is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to hire a full-time temporary Immigration Liaison Assistant for the Immigration Enforcement International section.
The Immigration Enforcement International Network (IEI) is the overseas branch of Immigration Intelligence, part of the Home Office Immigration Enforcement Directorate. IEI have a presence in approximately 44 countries worldwide, where illegal activity involving people and goods targeting the UK border are identified, investigated and disrupted.

If selected, we will seek to employ you as long as you are prepared to:
  • Attend any training courses in post and in the UK and perform to a satisfactorily level
  • Receive the appropriate level of UK national standard security clearance
  • If relevant, gain permission from the Turkish Immigration Authorities to take employment

IEI is responsible for identifying risks to the UK border through the analysis of intelligence data and other information obtained from HMG, other partners and external sources. The team exists to deliver the Home Office objectives to secure the UK Border and reduce net migration by:
  • Reducing the number of harmful inadequately documented passengers arriving by air;
  • Expanding the use of intelligence to disrupt organised immigration crime groups smuggling migrants to the UK;
  • Contributing intelligence-led risk profiling of 152,000 visa applications (2016 total). Istanbul is one of the busiest Visa Sections in the world and processes applications made in Turkey, Central Asia, the Caucasus countries, Israel and northern Cyprus.

An ILO’s work requires the ability to work as part of small team, flexibility, a determination to succeed and a proven track record of being able to prioritise your workload with the minimum of supervision. The successful candidate will need to have strong inter-personal skills and be able to forge excellent working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide support to the Immigration Liaison Manager and Immigration Liaison Officer (s) as appropriate, including arranging trips, providing budgetary support, compiling minutes;
  • Stakeholder liaison with banks, educational establishments and other organisations as required;
  • Help identify fraud trends in visa applications;
  • Actively liaise with ECAs and ECOs making referrals of visa applications to IEI;
  • Participate in and record compliance exercises in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Support the Immigration Liaison Manager and Immigration Liaison Officer in liaising with the Turkish National Police and host authorities;
  • Build and maintain relationships with UK bound airlines in dealing with enquiries regarding improperly documented passengers;
  • Prepare, compile and distribute statistics; maintain local databases;
  • Draft and circulate carrier alerts, information circulars, training handouts and newsletters

Other benefits and conditions of employment
This is a full-time temporary contract to cover a maternity leave of 9 months, for 5 working days (41.25 hours gross) per week. The start date is 1 March but the successful candidate is expected to start as soon as possible.

The annual salary for this position is 80,213.28 TL gross, A2 Senior level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.

All applicants should have the right to live and work in Turkey. The British Consulate General does not sponsor for work permits.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of 2 months.

Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General in Istanbul are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Turkish employment law.

  • Fluent in both Turkish and English
  • Good IT skills, particularly use of Excel
