Roots of Peace, a US-based NGO, is implementing the USAID-funded Agriculture Marketing Program (AMP) in Afghanistan. AMP aims over the 3-year period of implementation to increase export volumes and values from Afghanistan, introduce new agricultural products to foreign markets market, diversify export markets and increase value-added processing. AMP's Trade Offices primarily facilitate exports from Afghanistan: providing assistance in customs clearance; resolving import and ground-handling challenges; creating awareness and disseminating information about food import regulations (e.g. safety, packaging, labeling and testing); creating linkages between Afghan exporters and importers, buyers and distributors; identifying and providing referrals for logistics (transport, ground handling, food testing, and cold chain infrastructure) service providers to Afghan exporters; and organizing industry round tables to discuss challenges industry and opportunities.
They also assist in the organization of trade missions and trade shows: the identification of importers, buyers, distributors and supermarket representatives; undertaking outreach activities to promote the trade missions and trade shows; organizing Afghan pavilions or booths at national or regional trade shows; arranging B2B networking meetings; and managing promotional activities, including in-store supermarket promotions of Afghan products. AMP seeks a Trade Office Specialist (Turkey) to successfully establish, manage and operate a Trade Office in Istanbul, Turkey.
S/he will ensure that all activities are undertaken in compliance with USAID and ROP regulations, policies and procedures, and AMP objectives. S/he will undertake both administrative and technical tasks.
They also assist in the organization of trade missions and trade shows: the identification of importers, buyers, distributors and supermarket representatives; undertaking outreach activities to promote the trade missions and trade shows; organizing Afghan pavilions or booths at national or regional trade shows; arranging B2B networking meetings; and managing promotional activities, including in-store supermarket promotions of Afghan products. Education:
Work Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in, economics, business, agriculture or other relevant field of study.
Work Experience:
- At least 5 years' experien.ce with a private sector company or as a consultant.
- Experience in Turkey's horticulture sector highly desired. Experience in undertaking market/industry research, event management, agriculture industry engagement, agricultural supply chains, business networking, import/trade facilitation and/or promotion.
- Strong business acumen; ability to understand challenges faced by Afghan exporters and devise private-sector result-oriented solutions.
- Ability to manage a large workload with limited supervision.
- Motivation, flexibility and capacity to work under pressure and short deadlines, and strong sense of personal initiative.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including presentation skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to deliver well presented, formatted and professionally prepared documentation
- Good working knowledge of MS Office programs.
- English & Turkish language fluency

In Afghanistan, Roots of Peace have facilitated the export of fresh and dried fruits, nuts and spices to new markets in India and U.A.E. and increased agricultural exports from $250 million in 2019 to over $1.4 billion in 2020. Roots of Peace is implementing the Agriculture Marketing Program (AMP) in Afghanistan.
The Agriculture Marketing Program (AMP) builds on the successes of Roots of Peace's 10-year Commercial Horticulture & Agriculture Marketing Program (CHAMP), and aims over the 3-year period of implementation to increase export volumes and values, introduce new agricultural products to the market, diversify export markets and increase value-added processing. The increased exports will create additional demand for agricultural products that will drive job growth in rural areas. Key objectives/targets include increases in exports by US$450 million, domestics sales by US$50 million and jobs by 4,500.
Activities will include: researching new market opportunities for Afghan products; operating trade offices in key markets; organizing or participating in international B2B events, trade missions and trade shows; organizing promotional activities in key markets; providing incentives for businesses exporting existing, new or better products to existing or new markets; training in new markets, food safety, access to finance, etc.; facilitating access to trade credit; and mitigating trade impediments.
